SEVENTEEN. Music and history
SEVENTEEN is a South Korean pop group made up of thirteen members. The group is organised into three subunits: the Hip Hop Team, the Vocal Team and the Performance Team. Each focuses on a different part of the group's creative identity, from rap and vocals to choreography and stage performances.
Early days and debut
In 2013, the future members appeared in an online programme called Seventeen TV. Viewers could follow their training and preparations for debut. The programme ran for several seasons, some of which concluded with Like Seventeen concerts.
The group officially debuted in May 2015 with the mini album 17 Carat and the single Adore U. The release gained attention on international music charts. In September, the group followed up with the mini album Boys Be, strengthening its position and earning important early awards.
Growth and later releases
In 2016, SEVENTEEN released its first studio album, Love & Letter, followed by an expanded edition. The group also began a concert tour covering several countries in Asia and Australia. The mini album Going Seventeen arrived later that year.
In 2017, the group released Al1, featuring Don't Wanna Cry, followed by its second studio album, Teen, Age. The song Thanks gained popularity on international iTunes charts, helping the group reach an even wider audience beyond South Korea.
The following years brought the mini albums You Make My Day and You Made My Dawn. The track Home won ten awards on weekly music programmes. In 2020, the group released Hit The Road, a documentary offering a behind the scenes look at its tour. The mini album Heng:garæ sold more than one million copies in less than a week. In 2021, the group released Attacca, featuring Rock with You.
What makes SEVENTEEN distinctive?
The group's name reflects its structure: thirteen members, three subunits and one group. The project was initially planned under the name Tempest, with five members.
Current update
SEVENTEEN continues to pursue group activities alongside individual and subunit projects. In 2026, all thirteen members agreed to renew their contracts with their existing agency. Subunit projects are also continuing, including DREAMSCAPE, a release by the duo Jeonghan and Joshua.
