All About Levi's Stadium
The story of a new home for the San Francisco 49ers began to take shape in 1997, although construction did not start until April 2012. Levi's Stadium officially opened on July 17, 2014. Its stands are arranged across three main levels, with a standard capacity of 68,500 and the potential to expand to around 75,000 spectators. The seating layout is deliberately lower at the northern and southern ends, making room for large screens measuring more than 890 square metres each.
The project cost approximately 1.27 billion dollars and was financed primarily through public funding. Thanks to extensive use of prefabricated components, construction was completed in 819 days. The stadium incorporates water reuse systems and recycled materials, contributing to its LEED Gold certification. Its roof also features a garden covering approximately 2,500 square metres and a solar installation of a similar size.
The first event at the stadium was an MLS match between the San Jose Earthquakes and Seattle Sounders, attended by 48,765 spectators. In 2016, the venue hosted four matches during Copa América Centenario and served as the setting for Super Bowl 50. It has also welcomed major concerts by Taylor Swift, Beyoncé, Coldplay and other internationally recognised artists.
