The Red Bull Ring
Current update This guide covers the circuit, its history and its main characteristics. Event schedules and ticket availability may change.
The Red Bull Ring is located in Spielberg, Styria, Austria, and is closely associated with Red Bull Racing. Its setting among the Austrian hills makes it one of the most recognisable venues in motorsport. The circuit is known for its long straights, heavy braking zones and tight corners, where engine power, traction and mechanical grip play important roles. These features also create opportunities for overtaking.
History of the Red Bull Ring
The circuit originally opened as the Österreichring in 1969. It became a regular venue for the Austrian Grand Prix and developed a strong reputation among racing fans. In the 1990s, the track was extensively redesigned and became known as the A1 Ring. Red Bull acquired the circuit in 2005, and after further redevelopment it reopened as the Red Bull Ring in 2011.
The circuit is located in Spielberg and measures approximately 4.318 kilometres in its current Grand Prix configuration. Drivers complete the lap clockwise.
What makes the circuit special
The combination of fast straights, elevation changes and challenging braking zones tests both drivers and cars. Although aerodynamic performance remains important, acceleration, engine performance and grip are particularly valuable on this layout. The surrounding Alpine scenery adds to the appeal for spectators.
The A1 Ring and Österreichring
The A1 Ring was the name used after the major redesign in the 1990s. The changes shortened the circuit and introduced a more compact layout. The earlier Österreichring was longer and known for its fast, flowing character. These different configurations form an important part of the venue's history.
Race winners and international drivers
The circuit has hosted races featuring drivers from many countries. Past winners include Jo Siffert, Emerson Fittipaldi, Alan Jones, John Watson, Alain Prost and Niki Lauda. The venue has also welcomed prominent modern drivers, including Lewis Hamilton, Max Verstappen, Charles Leclerc and Valtteri Bottas.
Tickets for the Red Bull Ring
The venue hosts major motorsport competitions, including Formula 1 and MotoGP events. Visitors should check current event information and ticket availability before making plans. Ticket prices and availability depend on the event and the seller.
