Chelsea FC – The Story of a London Giant
Chelsea FC was founded in London in 1905, and Stamford Bridge has been its home since the beginning. Over the decades, the club steadily established itself in English football. Chelsea won its first English league title in the 1954–55 season, but its greatest transformation did not come until the beginning of the 21st century.
The Roman Abramovich Era
In 2003, Russian billionaire Roman Abramovich bought Chelsea for approximately £140 million. The new owner had an ambitious goal: to build a team capable of winning the biggest trophies in England and Europe. Thanks to substantial investment, the club signed many outstanding players and became a serious rival to the biggest teams.
In 2004, José Mourinho became Chelsea's manager. Under his leadership, the team won the English league title in the 2004–05 and 2005–06 seasons. Frank Lampard, John Terry, Didier Drogba and Petr Čech became key figures who left a lasting mark on the club's history.
The Road to the Top of Europe
In 2008, Chelsea reached the Champions League final but lost to Manchester United on penalties. Four years later, the club achieved its greatest dream. In 2012, Chelsea defeated Bayern Munich in the Champions League final, winning the trophy for the first time in its history. Didier Drogba played a crucial role, scoring the equaliser before converting the decisive penalty in the shootout.
Chelsea continued to enjoy success in the following years. The club won the Europa League in 2013, claimed the English league title in the 2014–15 season and lifted the Champions League trophy for a second time in 2021, defeating Manchester City 1–0.
The End of an Era
In 2022, Roman Abramovich sold the club after nearly 19 years as its owner. During this period, Chelsea won five English league titles and two Champions League trophies, among other honours. The club was acquired by a consortium led by Todd Boehly.
Chelsea's Legacy
Chelsea's success is the result of financial investment, outstanding players, ambitious managers and the ability to win the most important matches. Over many years, the club steadily built its reputation and became one of the most recognisable teams in European football. Stamford Bridge remains a symbol of this journey, while Chelsea's blue colours are associated with the pursuit of football's greatest trophies.
