BMO Field in Toronto, Canada, is the smallest stadium associated with the 2026 FIFA World Cup, but its size does not make it any less exciting. The venue is closely connected with Canadian football and soccer and has hosted numerous major sporting events. Its capacity was expanded to 45,000 for the 2026 World Cup. Toronto FC of Major League Soccer and the Toronto Argonauts of the Canadian Football League have called the stadium home. BMO Field has also hosted FIFA U 17 and U 20 World Cup matches, as well as international rugby fixtures. Its most recent major modernization took place between 2014 and 2016.
All about BMO Field
BMO Field is a multipurpose stadium in Toronto, Canada, primarily used for soccer and other sporting events. The original plan was to build a stadium on the York University campus, but the university withdrew from the project. The investment was subsequently moved to Exhibition Place, an area that had previously been home to four stadiums. The last of them, Exhibition Stadium, was demolished in 1999.
Construction of BMO Field began in 2006, and the stadium opened the following year with an initial capacity of approximately 20,000 spectators. Toronto FC played the first match there on April 28, 2007, against the Kansas City Wizards. Later that year, the venue hosted the final of the FIFA U 20 World Cup. The stadium originally cost approximately 72 million Canadian dollars to build. A record crowd of 22,453 attended the Toronto FC match against the Los Angeles Galaxy on April 13, 2011. BMO Field underwent renovations in 2010 and again between 2014 and 2016.
BMO Field events
Although BMO Field was originally designed to accommodate concerts as well as sporting events, its first major concert was held in 2007, when Genesis performed at the venue. Since then, the stadium has primarily served as the home of Toronto FC and has occasionally hosted other Major League Soccer matches. It has also welcomed Canadian lacrosse events, rugby fixtures and hockey related events.
BMO Field was one of the venues selected for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, with Toronto among the Canadian host cities. Preparations for the tournament included plans to increase the stadium capacity to 45,000 and improve the facilities. The venue remains an important part of Toronto's sporting landscape.
